The Next Generation Broadband Roadshow hits town in Gateshead on 18 March

  • The Leader of Gateshead Council, Councillor Mick Henry will open the Roadshow, the first event in a series planned by CBN and partners.
  • Derek Quinn, Group Director Development and Enterprise for Gateshead Council will discuss the wider economic benefits.
  • Liz Reid from Gateshead Council will present Gateshead Technology Innovation (G-ti)
  • Alcatel Lucent, our key sponsors, have worked closely with Gateshead Council on bringing NGA to the Baltic Business Quarter. They will set out the case for open access networks.

Gateshead is leading the way in developing NGA with their open access fibre network. The Gateshead story is interesting and inspiring and demonstrates how important high speed broadband is to businesses, people and the economy.

Also on the agenda is the national picture including discussion of the interim ‘Digital Britain Report’, published on 29 January by Lord Carter, minister for Communications, Technology & Broadcasting. Roger Darlington, a senior member of the Ofcom Communications Consumer Panel will discuss their latest report on ‘Local Initiatives on Next Generation Access’ and Steve Sheppard and Alex Roy from Adroit Economics will make the business case for NGA followed by a panel discussion.

Other dates in the Roadshow tour include:

24 March - Nottingham, Albert Hall - Connected Nottingham will set out plans for next generation broadband in this key area of the East Midlands
31 March - Bristol, Watershed Media City - Connecting Bristol and Bristol City Council will explain the vision for Bristol alongside representatives from Somerset and Devon, plus the local digital industries
22 April Birmingham, the Maple House Conference Centre - Stakeholders and partners will discuss ambitious plans for the West Midlands.
13 May Hampshire, venue to be confirmed – eHampshire and partners will set out their vision for Hampshire and the South East.
JuneManchester, date and venue to be confirmed

Each Roadshow has been designed to advance the debate on next generation broadband, which organisations are actively pursuing local projects, and the drivers behind them. The Roadshows are intended for key influencers and senior staff in local councils, Regional Development Agency officials, planners, developers, business, community groups and other stakeholders.
